They were extremely expensive to produce and maintain, which caused them to be used only sparingly throughout the early 1900s. In the 1920s, the invention of tungsten bulbs led to a major increase in commercial electric lights being manufactured and sold. After this point, they became a staple in many businesses because they were cheaper to produce than gas or oil lamps and they provided more illumination than other types of lighting at the time.
